Just an ordinary bloke who enjoys travels, life and photography. Anything with a sense of adventure, outdoors, walking and running, and connected to nature. Particularly birds, animals and landscapes. I'm not so good at photographing people, although our dogs are pretty cool. Whilst essentially a photography site, I meander into community, design and share the odd family moment. I am particularly concerned and confused about how we treat our environment.
I hope you enjoy Bilby Travels.
This site is always a work in progress. I'll get around to the blog one day.
Bilby relaxing on Ironbound Range, Tas.
I have bushwalked for many years now and enjoyed adventure travel. I would organise walks for my friends and take them away on extended wilderness treks. Somehow Bilby Travels became a fictitious company and a standing joke amongst our mates. We would jest about Bilby Travels like it was a bona fide adventure company, with its own CEO and management team. We had high standards for adventure experiences, with companionship and fun high on the agenda. And an unblemished safety record. We developed a healthy disdain for walkers with trendy gear and clothes, and also for larger organised groups and clubs on "wuzzy" walks. I would get calls from people wanting to know when the next Bilby Travels trip was on. It grew its own culture and its deeds on the trail were infamous.
I don't remember how exactly the name Bilby came about. Maybe Bilbys were timid, cautious critters, and, unfortunately, they are now endangered. A bit like me I suppose. Anyhow the name stuck. we hit the trail my name Bill was automatically replaced with Bilby. It then came into wider usage with the advent of grandchildren, who always called me Bilby from their early years. Kinda nice really and more interesting than Grandpa or Pop. And it spread from there.
A few years ago I got really passionate about photography. I make no professional claims, just an enthusiastic amateur. My interests are in Australian landscapes and animals., particularly birds. This site is primarily a photography site, with a few stories. I'm better with pictures than words. My other pursuits include trail running, bushwalking and creative endeavours.
I am also involved in our Blue Mountains community. I undertake a range of activities with Rotary and am involved with MYST; a not for profit organisation giving disadvantaged kids a help along with their lives.
You cannot be an avid bushwalker and photographer without having a commitment to the environment and conservation issues. I will no doubt meander into that area at times as well.
There are not many of us who sail through life without having to deal with stress. There is nothing better for the soul than a hike or a run through the Australian bush, listening to the birdsong. And if you get a photo, even better. So I hope to capture some of that spirit on this site.
