We really only discovered North Stradbroke Island after we moved to Brisbane in 2006. It became our favourite getaway for a few days here and there. Its only an hour or so from Brisbane by vehicular ferry. It is a magic spot, often under-rated. It has the most scenic beaches and vistas. The wildlife is unbelievable. We have never been there without seeing many birds, dolphins, koalas and even whales. You can camp, get a modest cabin or rent a cottage. There is enough space to get away from the cafes and restaurants. The fishing is excellent. We love it year round but avoid the summer holiday season.
